Asheville Youth Cycling (AYC) began as an interest in getting people, especially youth involved with, and fall in love with cycling. Joe Coddington is a former US Marine and also competed on the well-known LA Sheriff cycling team. During that time, he participated in various events including DARC and SANE programs at schools. Talking and helping guide youth came naturally to Joe.
In the early 2000’s, Joe started the Hearn’s junior cycling program. This program eventually evolved into AYC which he officially established in 2007 as a 501(c)3.
With initial assistance from the Brookshires (Tom-who is this), McGuire Wood & Bassette Law, Ben Hamrick and his accounting firm, AYC were off the ground. After being established, additional sponsorship came from Asheville Savings Bank, with DIY Music becoming a significant sponsor allowing the team to travel and attend more races.

All the kids racing were required to maintain good grades to participate. For Joe, he enjoyed the opportunity to hear the kids’ stories and experiences about racing. Helping the riders to become better kept Joe very involved. Managing the various skill levels and experiences of the riders created unique challenges. Clearly establishing race strategies with so many kids presented learning opportunities for everyone, including Joe. In addition, Joe had to learn how to communicate with each rider individually to be supportive and positive.
With all this effort, the riders from AYC began to see results. At one time AYC boasted over 40 juniors, traveled to races like L’Abitibi with riders later going to higher-tier programs like Garmin / Williams Academy and Project 2024. With the AYC riders getting stellar results, including national medals, other teams began recognizing the team and Joe’s efforts.

Success came strongly for the AYC riders. Over the years AYC riders have earned over 50 national medals along with podium in a stage at L’Alibita, a result as good as the US National team.
With the success that Joe was creating with the AYC riders, other teams were coming and convincing the riders to join higher, more top tier teams. Although this became somewhat frustrating to lose some of the best riders, Joe also knew this was the best for the riders to be able to continue their cycling dream. Joe remained focused on creating solid riders with strong skills, confidence and professionalism. All skills that are needed not only in cycling but also in life.
Although AYC has never become a top-tier program, it remains a strong locals grass-roots squad and focused on developing riders.
Joe is no longer directly involved with AYC, the program continues as part of the Downtown Asheville Racing Club (DARC). With the support from many people over the years, Joe can look back and be proud of his efforts in establishing the club, its development, growth and success.
